Looking Ahead to The Outer Worlds Expanded Content

Good news, everyone

The Outer Worlds was a big release from 2019, hailed by many Bethesda fans as what Fallout 4 should have been. This writer loved the sharp, witty dialogue and the wonderful environmental designs. It is a whole lot of fun!

Recently, it’s first expansion DLC was announced, entitled Peril on Gorgon. So, what is the story with it?

Perilous times

Set for release on September 9, Peril on Gorgon has been touted as an adventure to a new planet called Gorgon, After receiving a mysterious message, your player character is tasked with going there to meet Minnie Ambrose, who has been described as a “wealthy recluse”.

New weapons, an increased level cap of 33, new perks and flaws are just some of the highlights, along with some new science weapons—unique weapons, capable of some bizarre violence.

The terrain of Gorgon has been described as rocky, containing many cliffs and a bit more verticality than we have seen in the core game.

While that is not a lot of detail for the moment, I for one am excited just to simply have some more of The Outer Worlds at my fingertips.

Wait, there is more!

Peril on Gorgon is one of two expansions that have been confirmed. The second has yet to receive any official information, but we do know that it’s coming.

As far as my hopes for this currently unannounced expansion goes, at the bare minimum I hope for more of the same that has been described for the first DLC—new weapons, abilities, perks and flaws, etc.

I do feel however that this is an opportunity for Obsidian to do something a bit different with the second expansion. By all accounts, The Outer Worlds exceeded expectations in terms of sales., which in the video game world means there is more than likely going to be a sequel. A segway to the probable sequel in the form of DLC is a smart play here. The DLC of course needs to stand on its own, but this is a backdoor way to introduce characters who could be involved in a fully fledged sequel, and set up a story as well.

Not to say expansions should end in cliffhangers, but there could be some inspiration taken from Dishonored’s The Brigmore Witches DLC. Delilah, an antagonist introduced here, works as the antagonist but she also appears as the villain in the second main entry game. This is a smart way to expand the game world, and set themselves up for success and payoff in future games and content.

What do you think should be included in The Outer Worlds DLC, and even a full sequel? Let us know in the comments below!
